G Noida land acquisition stir reaches Bokaro

The ripples of the Greater Noida land stir, where farmers are protesting against the manner of acquisition, seem to have reached Bokaro.Unhappy with the compensation for their land acquired by the Bokaro Steel Plant, residents of Mahuar, Maheshpur panchayat and villages of Baidmara have now decided not to cooperate with authorities.
With this, the district administrations move to verify the applications of displaced persons who have applied for payment of revised compensation under Section 28 A of the Land Acquisition Act has hit a road block. The administration had started the process following a Jharkhnad high court order directing Bokaro district and Steel Plant authorities to identify bonafide displaced persons and award compensation to them.
According to displaced persons of Mahuar panchayat, the rate of payment for their land was not acceptable. Several of them alleged that there were many fake names included in the list of displaced persons. they also wanted BSL to return the surplus land to them. In Mahuar, only one person out of 3000 applications received come forward for verification on Thursday. Officials, however, said locals were preventing others from participating in the procedure, None of the applicants came up for the verification process at Maheshpur panchayat. Similar protests were withnessed in Baidmara and other villages.
When contacted, Bokaro deputy commissioner Dr. Amitabh Kaushal said he would review the situation with officials.
Sources said the district administration has begun verification of the applications I several panchayats around Bokaro city including Mahuar, Harla, Pindrajora, Asansol, ranipokhar, Naidmara, Sangiori, Maheshpur, Dhandabra, Tilabani, Harlam Kanphattam Nohram Chakpandeydih, Kerakindi, and Bharra. The process would continue till August 3.
In the second phase, six special officers would hold courts to decide the amount of payment to be made to each of the displaced. The compensation amount would be handed over to the displaced the third phase. BSL has given a sume of Rs. 70 crore for the exercise.
BSL had acquired land from the local people for building its steel plant in Bokaro In the past, the court had ordered for payment of revised compensation to the displaced persons. Altogether 10,312 persons had submitted application in this regard. As per an agreement between Bokaro steel plant, compensation slabs are Rs. 8000 per acre for fertile land and Rs. 6000 for others.
